PRACTICAL GUIDE

Extract sound, text subtitles and useful frames from video

A video may contain separate picture, audio and subtitle tracks. Extracting an existing track is different from recognising speech or reading captions drawn into the picture. Start with media inspection to see what is present.

Take it step by step

  1. Choose Media inspection and read the listed streams. It reports container information without transmitting the file.
  2. Extract video audio when an audio stream exists. Use WAV for an editing handoff or MP3 for common listening apps.
  3. Extract embedded subtitles only for a text subtitle track. The first matching track exports as SRT; edit and shift timings with Subtitle editor.
  4. Use Video frame extractor for individual JPEGs or Video thumbnail grid for a contact sheet. Select a bounded interval and inspect the selected frames.
A CONCRETE EXAMPLE

A situation to try.

Try an example in Extract embedded subtitles uses a synthetic MKV containing a known caption. A video with no subtitle track produces actionable feedback instead of inventing a transcript.

Use the tool’s synthetic example first where available. The example here explains a decision; it is not a reported benchmark result.

Before you call it done.

  • Burned-in captions are pixels and cannot be extracted as text here.
  • Bitmap subtitle formats are unsupported by the text export.
  • A muted clip has no soundtrack to extract.
  • Frame extraction is capped at 60 frames to bound memory.

Know the limits.

This release does not automatically transcribe captions inside these extraction tools. Embedded track selection is limited to the first matching text subtitle track. Review subtitle timing in your destination player.

This tool’s current boundary: A file without an audio track cannot produce a soundtrack. Lossy encoding changes quality.

Evidence and scope

Technical source guidance and task-specific output checks. These do not establish that every file, browser or device passes.

Use the checks above on your own exported result. A source explains the format or mechanism; it is not proof that this export preserved every feature.
